Storyline

The fourth round of Intra-Syrian negotiations started today in Geneva under auspices of the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.

Opening the negotiations, the UN Special Envoy said “I hope that, one day, people will look back on today and say that at this time, and in this place, the Syrians started the long hard journey towards peace."

De Mistura told the parties “I am not expecting miracles. We face an uphill task. If will not be easy. There are a lot of tensions. There is a lot of suffering that everyone has been bearing. But we must apply ourselves to this task."

The negotiations between the Syrian government delegation and opposition delegation are expected to focus on political issues including transitional governance, a new constitution, and free and fair elections as noted in Security Council resolution 2254.
