The Under-Secretary-General in charge of the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Hervé Ladsous, arrived today (20 Mar) in Juba, South Sudan.

Speaking after a meeting with South Sudan’s first vice president Taban Deng Gai, Ladsous called for secession of hostilities in the country in order to allow humanitarian access to the needy.

The United Nations peacekeeping chief said “in the view of the international community as expressed in the United Nations the sincere hope is aid process can re-start and that have to start with the session of hostilities and National dialogue as proposed by the President can certainly help but it cannot be as a substitutes to the resumption of the peace process so this is what we are working for and the UN is very supportive for the effort of the region in that context.”

The Press Secretary of Taban Deng Gai, Choul Laam said the government asked the UN to help on issues pertaining to the implementation of the Peace Agreement.

In an interview he said, “They discussed a number of issues pertaining to the implementation of the peace agreement, as well as the access and security situation in the country, of course the national dialogue and how can the UN support the system, his excellence the First Vice President gave very clear indication that government would like the UN to support the government in the issues pertaining to the implementation as well as the basic understanding that the government will implement the peace agreement.”

Ladsous is expected to engage with the Government and the humanitarian and diplomatic community. He is being accompanied by the Under-Secretary-General-designate for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, on both legs of the trip.
