“Now, Mr. Bemba please stand up. Taking into account the all of the above factors the Chamber imposes on your, Mr. Bemba, an additional joint sentence of 12 months, one year, imprisonment. The chamber does not consider it appropriate that this term be served concurrently with your existing sentence as the offenses are not related. Therefore, the Chamber orders that the sentence be served consecutively to your existing sentence.”

Storyline

The International Criminal Court (ICC) sentenced former Congolese vice-president Jean-Pierre Bemba today (22 Mar) to an additional year in prison and a fine of 300,000 Euros to be served consecutively to his existing 18-year sentence.

Bemba and four close aides were found guilty in October of bribing witnesses during his trial for war crimes for which he is currently serving 18 years in prison. He had been found guilty for commanding a militia that went on a deadly rampage in the Central African Republic in 2002-2003 and was appealing the court’s decision.

Fidèle Babala Wandu and Narcisse Arido were also sentenced to six and eleven months respectively, however the court considered the sentence of imprisonment as served as since the imposed sentence was less or equal to the time they served in detention from November 2013 to October 2014.

Jean-Jacques Mangenda Kabongo was sentenced to two years, but the sentence was suspended and will not take effect unless he commits another offence anywhere that is punishable with imprisonment. The same applied for Aimé Kilolo Musamba’s two and a half year sentence so long as his 30,000 Euro fine was paid within three months.

The fines imposed by the Court will ultimately be transferred to the Trust Fund for Victims.
