The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said thousands of displaced Iraqis from western Mosul have been arriving at the Hammam al-Alil camp, a few kilometres south of the city.
UNHCR said many people were spending their first night in a reception centre awaiting their tents which others were transferred to nearby camps to reunite with other family members.
People like Mohamed were desperate to flee the fighting as government forces battle to retake the city from ISIL militants. Mohamad’s relief is evident.

But while many are on the move, some have to wait for their loved ones.

Ghanim said he couldn’t find his family after reaching Hammam Al-Alil.

12-year old Khaled is calling the hospital. He said the extremist group was shooting at the people fleeing the city.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Khaled Waleed, 12-year-old displaced Iraqi:

He wants to leave this place but he hasn’t been united with his family members yet.

Families arriving here are exhausted, but happy to have finally found safety. Only one thing remains.
