Storyline

UN Secretary-General António Guterres visited the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan today (28 Mar) in what he called a visit of solidarity.

The Secretary-General toured a number of projects run by UN agencies for some 80,000 residents of the camp, including a UN-Women run project that gives women cash for work opportunities manufacturing school uniforms and sowing kits. He also visited a school run by the Jordanian Government and UNICEF and a UN refugee agency-funded project which aims to address the continuing learning needs of girls.

The camp is home to some 80,000 Syrian refugees who fled the violence in their own country. Speaking to the press prior to his departure from the camp, Guterres appealed to the parties of the Syrian conflict for peace. He said the crisis had become a tragedy not only for the Syrian people but also a threat to the stability of the region and the world. He said it was “terrible” that the Zaatari camp was still full with refugees and the “tragedy of Syria is still going on and on and on.”

Later in the day, Guterres met with Jordanian King Abdullah bin Hussein and the two discussed regional and international issues, including the situations in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and Libya and the international fight against terrorism. He then travelled to Ishtar on the Dead Sea where, tomorrow, he will participate in the opening session of the Summit of the League of Arab States.
