“This is a moment in which the Iraqi people, the people of Mosul, need the solidarity of the international community that solidarity cannot be denied because those soldiers that we have seen around are fighting for our security everywhere in the world. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said today (31 Mar) the people of Mosul needed international solidarity as the soldiers fighting to remove ISIL from the city were “fighting for our security everywhere in the world.”
Speaking to reporters following a visit to the Hasansham displacement camp, Guterres said the people of Mosul had suffered from the oppression of ISIS in terrible conditions and were “now suffering from the military operations that are needed to defeat terrorism.”
The Secretary-General said there was a lack of international solidarity which is needed for people fleeing the violence to live in humane conditions adding that the humanitarian programme was only eight percent funded. He stressed that solidarity was also needed to create the conditions for reconciliation within communities and at national level as soon as Mosul is fully liberated.
Guterres added that solidarity with Iraq was not just an act of generosity, rather the enlightened self-interest of all as “fighting terrorism in Mosul is the same as fighting terrorism anywhere.”
