Storyline

Close to three hundred displaced have sought shelter in a Protection of Civilians site located in the United Nations compound in South Sudan’s town of Wau, following a wave of fighting in and around the town.

Thousands of people, mostly women and children, sheltered at a Catholic church in the town and other locations – with exact numbers yet to be confirmed.

Though the area still remains tense, an overnight Monday calm was reported, following the weekend disturbances.

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the country (UNMISS) continues to host displaced caught in conflict, though it reiterates the primary responsibility for the protection of civilians in South Sudan being that of the Transitional Government of National Unity.

Reports reaching the UNMISS indicate that a number of government SPLA soldiers were killed in an ambush on Sunday (9 Apr) to the south of the town of Wau before the fighting spread to the town itself.

The UNMISS sent two patrols into Wau town on Monday (10 Apr) and said it had observed the bodies of 16 civilians in a hospital. There were ten people who had been injured.
