The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court told the UN Security Council today she is “deeply alarmed by reports that thousands of vulnerable migrants, including women and children, are being held in detention centres across Libya in often inhumane conditions.”

Briefing the members of the United Nations Security Council in New York today (8 May), Fatou Bensouda, The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) said “It is undoubtedly disconcerting to this Council that the ongoing political instability and the volatile security situation in Libya have reportedly led to the widespread commission of serious crimes.”

The prosecutor also said her office continues to receive and examine reports from a variety of sources “including non-governmental organisations and private individuals, with respect to crimes alleged to have occurred throughout Libya since 2011.”

Besouda said her office has received a reliable information that Saif Al-Islam Gadafi, son of late Moammar Gadafi and wanted by the ICC is under control of Zintan Revolutionaries’ Military Council based in Beghazi. She called upon “the Government of National Accord to take the necessary steps to transfer Mr Gaddafi into its custody so that Libya can surrender him to the Court in accordance with its international legal obligations, the judicial rulings of the Court, and repeated calls by members of this Council.”

The Prosecutor Besouda also said se is “deeply alarmed by reports that thousands of vulnerable migrants, including women and children, are being held in detention centres across Libya in often inhumane conditions.”

She added that “crimes, including killings, rapes and torture, are alleged to be commonplace.”

Besouda’s briefing today was thirteen such report to the UN Security Council on the situation in the north African nation.
