Storyline

Israeli ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said despite statements made by the Security Council condemning terrorist acts around the world, “so many members of this same Council are actually supporting and even encouraging such acts of terror without intending.”

Speaking to reporters in New York today (11 May), Danon said the Palestinian Authority (PA) was giving thousands of dollars to terrorists, and their families, which were either killed or incarcerated by Israel for carrying out attacks against Israelis and foreigners. He claimed that the payments were mandated by Palestinian laws as part of an organized system which glorifies terrorists and encourages terrorism.

Danon noted that the payments made to Palestinian prisoners are five times higher than the average salary in the Palestinian territories adding that the PA spends over 300 million USD annually for these types of payments which represented seven percent of its budget and 30 percent of foreign aid donated by the international community. He stressed that the message being made by President Mahmoud Abbas to Palestinian children was “kill innocent people and you and your family will be paid for the rest of your life.”

Danon said the international community must understand “that it is absurd to condemn terror while at the same time paying terrorists.” He called on the international community to make sure that funds given to the PA went to the right place and to tell President Abbas, “Enough is enough. Stop pledging to work towards peace while supporting terrorism.”

Asked if Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was trying to ignite a third Intifada in the occupied territory, Danon said he did not “recognize any capital in the Middle East that you have freedom of religion like we have in Jerusalem.” He added, “When you walk in the streets of Jerusalem, you see Muslims, Christians, and Jews walking the streets. You can pray in the holy sites. So I think every leader in the region should come to Jerusalem and see the way we treat all religions.”
