“We have positioned and flown in a peacekeeping force into the area. That peacekeeping force will be there temporarily to provide some support for humanitarian workers to be able to move in as well. And in particular for the ability of water trucks and water to be able to be brought into the area to help and assist those people who are there.”

“We are worried that without that assistance there could be an outbreak of diarrhoea and possibly cholera, we had one case of cholera already. And so the situation for us that there are peacekeepers very much to support the humanitarian efforts to bring short term relief to the people there until the rainy season comes, we are looking at about four weeks in total presence in the village of Aburoc.”

Storyline

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) deployed a contingent of Rwandan peacekeepers to Aburoc in Upper Nile State to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to tens of thousands of people fleeing from the conflict elsewhere in the country.

At a press conference in Juba, the head of UNMISS, David Shearer, confirmed that peacekeeping troops were now on the ground providing a secure environment for humanitarian workers so they can safely resume delivering aid.

Shearer said “we have positioned and flown in a peacekeeping force into the area. That peacekeeping force will be there temporarily to provide some support for humanitarian workers to be able to move in as well. And in particular for the ability of water trucks and water to be able to be brought into the area to help and assist those people who are there.”

Tens of thousands of people from Wau Shilluk, Kodok, and Tonga have fled ongoing violence in the region and are now sheltering in Aburoc. Approximately 4200 families have received materials for shelter and other necessary items so far. The most urgent need, however, is for clean water.

To facilitate the humanitarian effort, UNMISS peacekeepers are providing site security and the United Nations Mine Action Service is clearing old landmines on the road between Kodok and Aburoc to provide a secure delivery route for aid.
