Storyline

Bosco Niyonkuru, a refugee from Burundi, is making it his life mission to nurse patients at Nakivale hospital in Uganda back to health. It is a feat he takes on despite his own battle with cancer.

SOUNDBITE (English) Bosco Niyonkuru, Burundian Refugee Nurse:
“My dream really was to become a nurse. I feel that if I am far away from a patient who needs my help I really feel bad. I feel like someone can lose his life because of my absence.”

Bosco is a refugee from Burundi and a nurse working in a hospital in Uganda.

SOUNDBITE (English) Bosco Niyonkuru, Burundian Refugee Nurse:

The hospital is open to refugees and Ugandans.

Like many other refugees in Uganda, Bosco is able to earn a living.

After he was diagnosed with cancer, Bosco’s colleagues came together to care for him.

“They managed to raise some money. Staff would come and comfort me with my family and that’s how I coped. If there weren’t these staff I don’t know where I could be now.”

Bosco needs further treatment. He hopes to be resettled in another country with better access to the urgent care he needs and pursue bigger dreams.
