Storyline

In April, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) opened a new camp for Iraqis fleeing Mosul, located in the Hammam al-Alil area south of the city. Within mere weeks it filled to capacity.

Meanwhile thousands continue to arrive, displaced by fighting each day and in need of the basic elements of survival – food, water and shelter.

This is the 12th camp and the latest one to be built by UNHCR and its partners in response to the ongoing Mosul emergency. It’s less than four weeks since UNHCR opened the Hammam al-Alil 2 camp, with a capacity for 30,000 people. That camp is now almost full.

It only took one month for this Iraqi refugees camp to fill.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mariam, displaced Iraqi:
“We were hiding under the stairs, in the bathroom…we were eating herbs and some wheat.”

Thousands are still fleeing West Mosul every day. They come to UNHCR camps looking for safety.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ourouba, displaced Iraqi:
“I was hit by a mortar from a plane…I was in my house, making food for the children when I got hit by the shell.”

This is Hammam al-Alil 2 camp south of Mosul. It is 1 of 12 UNHCR camps sheltering displaced people from Mosul.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ourouba, displaced Iraqi:
“ We were given a tent, some mats, food and water. Thank God.”

The camp has reached its capacity in less than a month. More than 668,000 people have been displaced from Mosul since October.
