The President of the General Assembly, Peter Thomson, today (01 Jun) officially welcomed three colonies of Italian honeybees to the United Nations Headquarters in New York as part of the United Nations’ ongoing greening efforts.
The rescued swarm of Apis mellifiera linguistica (Italian honeybees) was given to the United Nations from Bees Without Borders, a non-profit founded by Andrew Cote, a fourth-generation beekeeper.
Thomson said “this moment is another step in our commitment at the United Nations to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. Three hives may not seem like a lot to you, but this is going to grow into 200,000 bees in this colony here, and as you know from SDG 15, in support of terrestrial integrity, that biodiversity is a huge part of SDG 15, and bees are essential to biodiversity.”
Cote presented President Thomson with the first bottle of honey produced by the bees.
The profits from the sale of the UN honey will go to a non-profit which supports sustainable apiary in developing countries. Bees Without Borders has agreed to care for the United Nations bees-in-residence.
