“The momentum swelling from The Ocean Conference is immense. It is beating against the mindlessness of marine pollution, driving the muck back from where it came for recycling or for abstinence. It is propelling rationality for the good of all into the elimination of harmful fisheries subsidies and decisive action to end destructive and illegal fishing practices. We can be the generation that rescues this great gift from Mother Nature.”

Storyline

Marking World Oceans Day, General Assembly President Peter Thomson today (8 Jun) said “the momentum swelling from The Ocean Conference is immense” as “it is beating against the mindlessness of marine pollution, driving the muck back from where it came for recycling or for abstinence.”

Thomson said the Conference is “propelling rationality for the good of all into the elimination of harmful fisheries subsidies and decisive action to end destructive and illegal fishing practices” and “it will carry us forward to sustainable fisheries management, and the restoration of fish stocks in the shortest feasible time.”

Ocean conservationist and filmmaker Fabien Cousteau, grandson of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, told the audience that “together we will change the course that we have set for ourselves.”
Cousteau said “representing tens of trillions of dollars in economic value as well as a priceless value in intangible benefits, our oceans are quite literally the foundation of our existence.”
Businessman and Philanthropist Richard Branson said “the ocean gives us oxygen, it gives us food, it gives us joy; we give it plastic, we saturate it with carbon, and we relentlessly extract the life out of it. I am not going to repeat all the terrible things we’ve been doing to the ocean, because our job is clear; to unite to revive it. And right here, in this global hall of humanity is where we can begin to make that happen.”

For his part, Mexican actor Diego Luna said “we can fool ourselves and remain indifferent. We can leave this problem to our children and grandchildren and continue hiding behind a shield of ignorance, in fact we already are doing that pretty well. But we could also be grateful to have this chance to be part of this generation, to have the privilege of living in this time where we can still do something about this grave issue; where we can generate profound systemic change. We can be the generation that rescues this great gift from Mother Nature.”

This year, World Oceans Day is being celebrated alongside the first-ever The Ocean Conference, which has been under way in New York since Monday and wraps up tomorrow, aiming to strengthen commitments to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 14 – to conserve and viably use the ocean.
