“Ever since I joined the group, I was able to buy a pig. It immediately gave birth and I was able to build a proper house. I see that my life keeps changing which gives me hope that I might achieve even more.”

“My dream is to turn the house that I have built, with the support of the fish cage group into a storage room for my crops, if I have the money so that I can sell them in Kampala to buy a car and drive myself like everyone else.”

“I think about what I’ve been able to achieve, building this house and I think that as a group we could develop even more.”

Congolese refugees fleeing war have not only found refuge in Rwamunga, Uganda, but have also joined forces with locals on an innovative business cooperative. With the support of UNHCR and UNDP they are raising, harvesting and selling fish, and making plans for their future.
Refugees and Ugandans are in the boat together as partners on this fish farm.

Janine is a Congolese refugee. Being part of this group has helped the single mother support her family.

“Ever since I joined the group, I was able to buy a pig. It immediately gave birth and I was able to build a proper house. I see that my life keeps changing which gives me hope that I might achieve even more.”
The group is selling the day’s catch to local buyers at $1 apiece.

The group meets once a week at Janine’s house. They save together and take loans to start small businesses. Janine says this is only the beginning
