Storyline

International Labour Organization (ILO) chief Guy Ryder said conflicts and disasters “are very bad news to those of us who are trying to put an end to child labour.”

Speaking today (12 Jun) at an event marking the World Day Against Child Labour in Geneva, Ryder said the world today was facing the greatest refugee crisis it has known for decades as crisis and disasters was afflicting many nations around the world. He said the “homes destroyed, families disrupted, (and) schools out of business” rendered children vulnerable. He stressed the need to do more to protect refugees and support the affected host countries to give adult refugees the opportunity to join the work force and their children the opportunity to receive an education.

ILO said over 1.5 billion people live in countries that affected by conflict, violence and fragility, while some 200 million people are affected by disasters every year; a third of them are children. The Organization said a significant proportion of the 168 million children engaged in child labour live in areas affected by conflict and disaster.
