“It is tragic that this has happened to the people that have already gone through so much and so much suffering. Staff have been working closely over night to coordinate the response with other agencies and authorities in the Kurdistan region of Iraq and Bagdad to ensure that those who have fallen ill are able to receive swift medical treatment, and that the seriously sick are provided with transfer to the nearby hospitals.”

International Organisation of Migration (IOM) spokesperson Joel Millman said some 752 people fell ill with food poisoning in the Hasansham U2 camp for the displaced near the Iraqi city of Mosul resulting in the death of one child and a woman.
Speaking to reporters in Geneva today (13 Jun, Millman said some 312 people also had to be hospitalized as a result of the food poisoning according to staff in Erbil. He reported that a contractor had brought food to the camp around 4 pm to be served at 7:30 to break the daily Ramadan fast. He said authorities were investigating “where the contamination came from and whether or not it happened as a result of those hours between the arrival and the serving or something else.”
UN refugee agency (UNHCR) spokesperson Andrej Mahecic expressed the agency’s concern with the event at the camp which houses some 6,300 Iraqis displaced by the fighting in Mosul. He said it was “tragic that this has happened to the people that have already gone through so much and so much suffering” adding that UNHCR staff have been working closely over night to coordinate the response with other agencies and authorities to ensure that those who have fallen ill “are able to receive swift medical treatment.” Mahecic said more water was being provided to the camp and additional health agencies have been brought in to help with the response. He stressed that UNHCR was waiting for the police investigation to understand clearly the chain of events and to draw the lessons from this tragic incident which he said has to reinforce the public health protocols for all agencies to prevent such situations occurring again in the future.
