Storyline

On the first day of his visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said it is imperative “to put an end on the troublesome situation” in the Kasai region, as well as to prosecute those responsible for numerous alleged massacres of civilians in Kasai.

United Nations (UN) peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix arrived Monday (12 Jun) in Kinshasa, on a five-day visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Under-Secretary-General Lacroix first met with the DRC Prime Minister Tshibala Nzenzhe Bruno where he highlighted the UN’s support towards achieving peace and security in the country.

He said ”the message is that the United Nations are friends to the Congo and to Congolese people and we are determined to help the country and its people to achieve a stability and advance the inclusion process in order to organize fair and democratic elections.”

The peacekeeping chief also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Léonard She Okitundu to discuss the ongoing unrest in Kasai region of the country, where several massacres of civilians allegedly took place over the past several months, including the killing of two United Nations human rights experts in March this year.

Lacroix said it is imperative “to have those responsible for these massacres face justice.”

Lacroix will also meet with Congolese political stake-holders and members of the civil society.

His tour will also take him to Kananga, Goma and Beni in the restive east part of the country before returning to Kinshasa to meet with the President Joseph Kabila.
