Storyline

The World Food Programme (WFP) said it urgently needs 63 million USD to meet the basic food need of some one million South Sudanese refugees in Uganda for the next six months.

WFP said Uganda was now hosting more refugees than any other African country and continued to keep its borders open to those fleeing conflict or persecution. WFP representative in Uganda Elkhidir Daloum said Uganda’s “very generous” model allows refugees to have access to land and work, and have freedom of movement. He said the model was “very promising” and WFP would like to see it succeed in Uganda and “replicated in Africa.”

WFP said Uganda was now hosting some 1.3 million refugees, a million of them South Sudanese including 284,000 arriving this year alone. The Programme said its operation in the country has more than doubled in the last year and has only met the needs of the new arrivals adding that ration cuts have affected some 200,000 refugees who had arrived prior to July 2015.
