Storyline

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres today (22 Jun) visited the Imvepi refugee camp in Uganda, a day before a pledging conference titled ‘Refugee Solidarity’ is scheduled to take place in Ugandan capital Kampala, aiming to drum up support and mobilize resources for hundreds of thousands of refugees being hosted in Uganda.

The Imvepi camp, opened as recent as 21 February and almost at its capacity, is hosting some 120,000 mostly South Sudanese refugees.

It is the second largest refugee camp in the region, with Bidibidi hosting close to 300,000 people.

At the end of the visit, Guterres said “what we have all seen is the demonstration of the extraordinary generosity of the people and the Government of Uganda, receiving so many hundreds of thousands, almost 1 million, South Sudanese refugees as sisters and brothers and sharing with them their land and everything they have.”

Referring to South Sudan, he said “unfortunately, the leaders of the country have not deserved the people they have. And the people are suffering enormously with this endless war. It is time for the war to end.”

Touring the camp with the Secretary-General was the Prime Minister of Uganda who called upon the international community to “contribute generously so that we are able to raise the necessary resources to support the refugees and also assist the host communities.”
