Storyline

Held today (23 Jun) in Uganda’s capital Kampala, the Solidarity Summit on Refugees raised more than $350 million in pledges to support more than 1.2 million refugees hosted, for the most part, in local communities.

The event was co-chaired by the President of Uganda Yoweri Musevini and the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

During the opening session, the Secretary-General praised Uganda’s Government and people for the way they had opened the country’s borders and their homes to refugees.

He said “it is necessary for the international community to recognize that Uganda has had an exemplary refugee policy in the past and, even today faced with the largest refugee in-flow of the past year, Uganda remains a symbol of the integrity of the refugee protection regime that unfortunately is not being respected everywhere in the world.”

Guterres called upon the international community show its solidarity with the refugees and Ugandan people and its authorities, because, he said “without that solidarity this effort is not sustainable and, if this effort is not sustainable, the impact on the stability of the region will be absolutely dramatic. It’s time for us all to assume our responsibilities and I count on your commitment and your solidarity.”

In remarks to the press after the event, the Secretary-General congratulated the Ugandan Government for the conference.

He said what has been pledged “is a good start, he said, but we cannot stop.”
