“There are still 263 million children out of school and are not getting education and the number of primary school kids not in school is growing every day. So we have under SDG 4, we have enormous work still to be done.”

“Where my father was born is a place where education is not regarded as an important thing, and most people who go to school are seen as the members of the community as if they are just wasting time. But I hope that through the work that I am doing, I am thinking about improving it by educating my community more to understand that the importance of education and especially for young people for a sustainable future.”

On the side lines of a High-Level Event on Education, the President of the General Assembly, Peter Thomson, told reporters that “there are still 263 million children out of school and are not getting education, and the number of primary school kids not in school is growing every day.”
Thomson said “we have enormous work still to be done” under Sustainable Development Goal number 4 (SDG4).
SDG4, education, is at the heart of the UN’s 2030 Agenda and essential for the success of all Sustainable Development Goals.
Alongside the GA President, 17-year-old Saul Mwame from Tanzania, said “education has the ability to change lives. And I know that education is liberation. Not only to only a few people, but to all people, and it should be considered, education, as a very important thing to all people, including young girls in different humanitarian situations.”
Mwame said “where my father was born is a place where education is not regarded as an important thing, and most people who go to school are seen as the members of the community as if they are just wasting time. The event was convened in partnership with key SDG 4 stakeholders to drive a new push for inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
