The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the end of the most recent Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
WHO made the announcement on Sunday (2 July), 42 days after the last confirmed Ebola patient in the affected Bas-Uélé province tested negative for the disease for the second time. The Organization said it will continue enhanced surveillance in the country and strengthen preparedness and readiness for any future Ebola outbreaks.
The outbreak claimed the lives of four people while four others survived the disease. This was the DRC’s eighth Ebola outbreak since the virus was discovered in the country in 1976.
WHO said the effective response to this latest outbreak was possible due to the timely alert by local authorities of suspect cases, immediate testing of blood samples with strengthened national laboratory capacity, the early announcement of the outbreak by the government, rapid response activities by local and national health authorities, and speedy access to flexible funding. WHO said it had deployed more than 50 experts to work closely with the government and partners on the ground.
