United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres, Turkish Cypriot leader Mutafa Akinci, and Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades met today (06 Jul) with representatives of the United Kingdom (UK, European Union (EU) Greece and Turkey as talks continue towards a possible settlement on the Mediterranean island.
The UN backed Conference, which began on 28 June is taking place in the Swiss town of Crans-Montana.
Upon arrival, EU High Representative Federica Mogherini said “I arrived yesterday night to support the work of the UN, the Secretary-General, and the Special Envoy. I’ve seen that there is political will, enough space. The European Union is here to fully support and accompany this process, and that we are hoping for the best for today. We think there is a space. I am always optimistic.”
Cyprus has been divided since 1974. The negotiations have come down to six main areas, which include new territorial boundaries, power-sharing and the economy.
