“My mission of course was not to analyse the impact otherwise of sanctions, but rather to look at the humanitarian situation for people and, you know, what was the trajectory of their human development, is it getting better, is it getting worse, what are the vulnerabilities, what are the issues that we really need to be focusing on. So, I know that the sanctions issue is a controversial issue and its been dealt with at the highest levels, and all I can say is that, you know, we hope that those sensitive political issues will get solved positively to the benefit of the people of Eritrea.”

Storyline

Upon his return from a fact finding trip to Eritrea, John Ging of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said “50 percent of the children under the age of five are suffering from stunting and 39 percent of the children are generally underweight.”

Ging said that humanitarian efforts should concentrate on the issue of malnourishment and food insecurity and said that “given the geographical location of Eritrea it does find itself very susceptible to harsh climatic conditions, and not least last period around El Niño.”

Regarding the effects of sanctions on the Eritrean population, Ging said this was a “controversial issue” and expressed hope that “those sensitive political issues will get solved positively to the benefit of the people of Eritrea.”
