”Nelson Mandela was known as prisoner 46664 for 18 years. But he never became a prisoner of his past. Sentenced to hard labour and solitary confinement on Robben Island, he rose above suffering and indignity to lead his country, and our world, to a brighter day. He did not succumb to bitterness or personal animosity, but poured his formidable energy into realizing his vision of a peaceful, multi-ethnic, democratic South Africa.”

Celebrating the Nelson Mandela International Day today in New York, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “Mandela continues to inspire the world through his example of courage and compassion, and his commitment to social justice and a culture of freedom and peace.”
Speaking at an informal meeting of the UN General Assembly to mark what would be Mandela’s 99th birthday, the Secretary-General also said that despite being imprisoned for 18 years Mandela “did not succumb to bitterness or personal animosity, but poured his formidable energy into realizing his vision of a peaceful, multi-ethnic, democratic South Africa.”
Guterres said “each of us can be inspired by Nelson Mandela’s example, and by his famous words: It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
Speaking also at the event, US actor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Danny Glover said “Mandela led us on a path of justice, democracy and equity by transforming his righteous indignation into the activist movement with a pragmatic agenda. In the process, he showed the world that non-violent resistance when combined with sustained activism is the key to transforming a potential dead end into a new beginning.”
In November 2009, the UN General Assembly declared 18 July "Nelson Mandela International Day" in recognition of the former South African President’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.
In December 2015, the General Assembly decided to extend the scope of Nelson Mandela International Day to also be utilized in order to promote humane conditions of imprisonment, to raise awareness about prisoners being a continuous part of society and to value the work of prison staff as a social service of particular importance.
This year, the Nelson Mandela Foundation is dedicating Mandela Day to Action Against Poverty, honouring Nelson Mandela's leadership and devotion to fighting poverty and promoting social justice for all.
