The Security Council today unanimously adopted a resolution renewing the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) until 31 January 2018.
The resolution, which was put forward by the United Kingdom, also calls on both sides to continue to engage “as a matter of urgency” in consultations with UNFICYP on the demarcation of the buffer zone, and requests from them to allow access to deminers and to facilitate the removal of the remaining mines in Cyprus within the buffer zone.
Egyptian ambassador Abdellatif Aboulatta stressed “the high importance of UNFICYP in Cyprus" and called for "its continuous role in maintaining calm and creating a safe environment in Cyprus.”
He also said “the mission should also continue its role as a mediator and a facilitator.”
The resolution 2369 to renew the UNFICYP’s mandate comes after the failed negotiations of the unification talks in the Conference on Cyprus in May 2017 in Geneva.
