United Nations
Relief & Rehabilitation Agency
(UNRRA 1944-1947)
Towards the end of the WWII UNRRA began efforts to alleviate the suffering of millions of refugees throughout Europe. Besides meeting the immediate needs of war victims, UNRRA also helped to repatriate the displaced, whenever possible, or to resettle them to countries of their choice.
United Nations
Relief & Works Agency
(UNRWA 1949 - present)
After the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled their homes. The United Nations established UNRWA in 1949 to attend to the needs of stateless Palestinians who hoped one day to return.
United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR 1951 - present)
In 1951, UNHCR was created as a short term measure to care for the one million European refugees who remained after World War II. Armed conflicts and natural disasters have caused UNHCR’s mandate to be continuously extended. Today it embraces over 20 million refugees in more than 100 countries.
