Wrapping a three-day visit to South Sudan, UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said “every possible effort” was being made to expedite the deployment of a 4000-strong Regional Protection Force to South Sudan.

Speaking to journalists in the capital Juba today (03 Aug), Lacroix said Nepalese and part of the Bangladesh engineering unit are already in the country, with efforts being made to expedite the arrival of a battalion from Rwanda. He said the UN is encouraging troop contributing countries “to do their best to have as rapid a deployment as possible” adding that the support and cooperation of the South Sudanese Government would be need also to help in “expediting the procedures that are needed to operationalize the deployment of the RPF.”

Lacroix said he discussed the IGAD initiative “towards the revitalization of the peace agreement” with President Salva Kiir and other senior officials adding that it is “a very important and positive thing that the countries in region are being more engaged in helping South Sudan return to peace.” He said the UN welcomed and supported this new engagement.

Lacroix emphasized that warring parties needed to do their best to bring an end to ongoing fighting and said the UN is determined to do its best to help the population.

Lacroix described his visit to Malakal on Wednesday as “quite informative” on the efforts that have been made there to support the population. He said he agreed with local authorities there to continue to increase cooperation in order to help the return of stability and generate better opportunities for the people in the area.
