Storyline

A year on from the Olympics, five refugee athletes are competing again on the international stage at the Athletics World Championships being held this week in London. Two of the refugee athletes also competed in the Olympics in Rio.

Five refugee athletes in London from Kenya are set to compete in the World Athletics Championships opening this week, the first time in the competition’s 34-year history that refugees will be taking part.

Ahmed Bashir Farah, Anjelina Lohalith, Dominic Lobalu, Rose Lokonyen and Kadar Omar will be participating as members of the Athlete Refugee Team.

SOUNDBITE (English) Rose Nathike, Refugee Athlete:
“For me it (the championships) give me hope to continue with my career because at least its better when you are training and you achieve something and you participate in some other places. That can give you hope and courage to work harder at least you get used to the competition.”

For some, this won’t be the first time they compete at the international level. Anjelina and Rose were part of the Refugee Olympic Team in the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.

SOUNDBITE (English) John Anzrah, Athletics Refugee Team Coach:
“I am expecting as a coach to have a good result than the ones achieved in Rio.”

The athletes are pleased to have the opportunity to compete internationally after months of training in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
