Storyline

The UN spokesperson said today in New York that one UN peacekeepers and one Malian soldier died in attacks this morning on UN camps in Douentza, in the Mopti region of Mali’s north.

Another peacekeeper was slightly injured during the attack by non-identified gunmen.

Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq said the UN Mission in Mali, known under its French acronym MINUSMA, condemned the attack.

He also said “we join our colleagues in offering our condolences to the families of the victims and to their governments.”

Two assailants were reportedly killed during coordinated attacks on two MINUSMA camps in Douentza which started at about 5:30 Monday morning. The rest of assailants retreated when Malian army troops, stationed nearby, came in support to MINUSMA peacekeepers.
