“They went directly to destroy the communication hub for the headquarters. So, they knew where it was. So, considering what has happened, what is important is that our Malian brothers and sisters need to cooperate with FAMA, need to cooperate with their brothers in MINUSMA so that we can deal with it. They have no reason, they are no more than barbarians and the population really need to help us fight them.”

Storyline

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Mali, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, today (16 Aug) visited the site of Monday’s attacks which resulted in the deaths of one UN peacekeeper, a Malian soldier and a member of the Malian gendarmerie, along with six Malian contractors.

Annadif, who is also the Head of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission (MINUSMA,) arrived accompanied by Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Idrissa MacDonald.

Speaking to reporters, Annadif said “this barbarism is shocking. Unfortunately, it is repeating itself and if I am to ask for something here is for the cooperation of the local population. Because it is impossible that two vehicles arrive and drop the personnel with such an arsenal and not to raise an alarm. The cooperation of the population is extremely important.”

The delegation was briefed on the details of the attack including the destruction of the mission camp’s communication device.

Annadif said the attackers “went directly to destroy the communication hub for the headquarters. So, they knew where it was.”

MacDonald said “we can see a great determination of those who planned this attack. It is more than a criminal act. And this [attack] was a reality check for everyone in regards to the increasingly violent environment. We need to revise our strategy. It is not a moment to give up.”

Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned the attacks. Guterres also commended the efforts of Mali and the other countries of the Group of Five for the Sahel – Burkina Faso, Chad, Mauritania and Niger – for their efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism, and to promote peace and development in the region.
