Storyline

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is planning to step up its patrols in the town of Tori to include patrolling on foot through the town and at night to create a more secure environment.

Torit, a town in Eastern Equatoria was once safe but is now a target for criminals. Some of the violence is political with ongoing intercommunal clashes and violence between those involved in the broader South Sudanese conflict.

Others are motivated by the dire economic situation to rob and loot simply to survive.

The Head of the mission, David Shearer said Torit “has an enormous amount of potential” as it has got “good hard-working people and great soils” and “should be one of the most prosperous places in the country.”

After meeting Imatong State Governor Tobiolo Alberio Oromo, he said the patrols have created “more stability and confidence.”

The roads in the region are in a poor condition with many inaccessible because of damage caused by war and weather as well as an ongoing risk of ambushes by armed groups.

The deployment of the Regional Protection Force to Juba will enable existing UNMISS troops to expand their operations to places like Torit, particularly to patrol strategically important roads to make travel safer and to facilitate trade.
