“I don’t want to underestimate the challenges that Somalia is facing. We’re very much aware of that, and I think about the Somalis dealing with the drought this year for example as a challenge. But nevertheless, despite the very real challenges, I sense a real forward momentum in terms of political developments, in terms of reforms and transparency, in terms of things moving toward one-person one-vote electoral system for 2020 parliamentary elections.”

Storyline

During a visit to the Somali capital Mogadishu on Thursday (24 Aug), UN political chief Jeffrey Feltman said “despite the very real challenges” facing the country, he sensed a “real forward momentum” in the country.

Feltman said he was visiting the country to demonstrate the UN’s support to for Somalia as the country addresses a number of challenges, ranging from the drought to security and political developments. He said he sensed a “a real forward momentum in terms of political developments, in terms of reforms and transparency, in terms of things moving toward one-person one-vote electoral system for 2020 parliamentary elections.”

Prime Minister Hassan Kheyre told Feltman in a meeting that there is “a sense of unity in the country.” He said, “Civil society, religious leaders, women and youth, and every other group in society, are now willing to join, contribute, take part and people see hope.”

Feltman also met with National Independent Electoral Commission as well UN and African Union mission officials in the country. This was his first visit to Somalia since the election of President Farmaajo and the swearing-in of the tenth Parliament.
