Areesha camp is one of the transit camps, where 11,000-13,000 internally displaced people from Deir-ez-Zor and Raqqa are seeking shelter. The camp is a makeshift site, yet families are being confined and the camp is far from temporary.
Families wish to flee the camp and move on with their lives.
To safeguard the health of children and their mothers, UNICEF is screening for malnutrition and providing basic primary health care.
10-year-old Mohammad, displaced from Deir-ez-Zor, has not seen his father in two years. His wish is for everyone to leave the camp and go back home.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mohammad, 10, Displaced from Deir-ez-Zor:
“We want to go to Damascus, to my father. We want to study. Get all the people out. Get them out, get them out. I have been here for two years.”
UNICEF has been trucking 300,000 litres of safe water on a daily basis, raising awareness of children and their caregivers on issues related to safe water handling, sanitation and hygiene. UNICEF is also installing latrines and showers.
