Storyline

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) expressed grave concern over reports that Rohingya Muslims have died trying to reach safety as they flee the continuing conflict in Myanmar.

UNHCR said an estimated 123,000 refugees have arrived in Bangladesh since violence broke out in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state last month. The agency noted that people who have made it to Bangladesh are in poor condition as most of them had walked for days, crossing mountains and rivers, with whatever they could salvage from their homes. UNHCR said it continues to support efforts to ensure safe passage for people fleeing violence and stressed the need for additional emergency shelters and land as more refugees arrive.

Meanwhile, the World Food Programme (WFP) said it has WFP has provided tens of thousands of people with food, including high-nutrient porridge to women and children who are arriving hungry and malnourished. WFP said it needs 11.3 million USD to support the influx of people, in addition to those already living in camps.
