Storyline

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said today (08 Sep) an estimated 270,000 Rohingya refugees have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh in the past two weeks as violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State intensified.

More than 30,000 Rohingya refugees have arrived in the past two weeks to Kutupalong refugee camp alone and UNHCR said the refugee camp is filled beyond capacity. The Agency noted that the vast majority of refugees are women and children and are seeking shelter in makeshift tents along the nearby roads.

The Rohingya are a stateless Muslim minority in Myanmar who have faced discrimination and extreme poverty for decades. They have not been allowed to exercise their basic rights including the freedom to move, right to education, work and other social, civil and political rights. UNHCR called for urgent action to address the root causes of the recent surge in violence, so that people are no longer compelled to flee and can eventually return home in safety and dignity.
