3. SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Thomson, President of the General Assembly, United Nations:
“Two years after the momentous adoption of the 2030 agenda, implementation is not yet moving at the speed or scale required to meet our ambitious goals. Progress on individual goals is at best uneven still, as evidenced on the ground where it matters most. The mixed picture is reflected across regions, between sexes, and among people of different ages, wealth and locales, including urban and rural dwellers.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Thomson, President of the General Assembly, United Nations:
“We have the resources, the ideas, the technology, and we have the motivation. Add leadership, courage, and an unwavering commitment to progress, and we will reach our 2030 destination with goals fulfilled. As I’ve said many times before, together we are strong. When it comes to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we succeed or fail together. We are addressing the sustainability of our planetary ecosystem, the integrity of our global economic system, and the equity of humanity. We will not fail because we love our grandchildren, and we will succeed because we have not come this far only to be defeated by greed. And I thank you.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Thomson, President of the General Assembly, United Nations:
“It is clear that while we now have momentum on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, we need greater momentum. We need to scale up. We’ve only got 13 years left. Time is not on our side. I am very confident that we have the resources to do the 2030 Agenda to its full extent.”

“The people of the United States, the cities, some of the world leaders in climate action, al come from this country. So, regardless of the position of a political administration, I do believe that Americans are absolutely committed to this climate action that is necessary, renewable energy and things like that.”

Storyline

The outgoing president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today (8 Sep) said that “two years after the momentous adoption of the 2030 agenda, implementation is not yet moving at the speed or scale required to meet our ambitious goals.”

Peter Thomson, who ends is term as President of the 71st UNGA on 12 September, said “progress on individual goals is at best uneven still,” reflecting a “mixed picture” across regions, as well as “between sexes, and among people of different ages, wealth and locales, including urban and rural dwellers.”

Thomson said “we have the resources, the ideas, the technology, and we have the motivation. Add leadership, courage, and an unwavering commitment to progress, and we will reach our 2030 destination with goals fulfilled.”

He said “we are addressing the sustainability of our planetary ecosystem, the integrity of our global economic system, and the equity of humanity. We will not fail because we love our grandchildren, and we will succeed because we have not come this far only to be defeated by greed.”

At a later press encounter, Thomson said “it is clear that while we now have momentum on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, we need greater momentum. We need to scale up. We’ve only got 13 years left. Time is not on our side. I am very confident that we have the resources to do the 2030 Agenda to its full extent.”

Asked about the impact of the United States withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement on the SDGs, he said “the people of the United States, the cities, some of the world leaders in climate action, all come from this country. So, regardless of the position of a political administration, I do believe that Americans are absolutely committed to this climate action that is necessary, renewable energy and things like that.”

The SDGs, adopted by the UNGA in 2015, build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and aim to go further to end all forms of poverty. The new Goals are unique in that they call for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-income to promote prosperity while protecting the planet.
