Storyline

The outgoing president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today (8 Sep) said that “two years after the momentous adoption of the 2030 agenda, implementation is not yet moving at the speed or scale required to meet our ambitious goals.”

Peter Thomson, who ends is term as President of the 71st UNGA on 12 September, said “progress on individual goals is at best uneven still,” reflecting a “mixed picture” across regions, as well as “between sexes, and among people of different ages, wealth and locales, including urban and rural dwellers.”

Thomson said “we have the resources, the ideas, the technology, and we have the motivation. Add leadership, courage, and an unwavering commitment to progress, and we will reach our 2030 destination with goals fulfilled.”

He said “we are addressing the sustainability of our planetary ecosystem, the integrity of our global economic system, and the equity of humanity. We will not fail because we love our grandchildren, and we will succeed because we have not come this far only to be defeated by greed.”

Asked about the impact of the United States withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement on the SDGs, he said “the people of the United States, the cities, some of the world leaders in climate action, all come from this country. The SDGs, adopted by the UNGA in 2015, build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and aim to go further to end all forms of poverty. The new Goals are unique in that they call for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-income to promote prosperity while protecting the planet.
