The new United Nations humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock visited the N’Gagam displacement site in Niger on Sunday (10 Sep) in an effort raise the global profile of the Lake Chad Basin crisis, which is affecting some 17 million people in the region.
Lowcock is traveling to Niger and Nigeria from 9 to 12 September in his first visit in his new capacity. At the N’Gagam displacement site, located in Niger’s south-eastern Diffa region, the humanitarian chief met with groups of displaced women and men to get a first-hand assessment of the difficulties they face. He promised them he would take their story to the UN General Assembly next week, and tell the leaders gathered there “that these people believe that we can make a difference, for them.”
Niger’s south-east is facing an unprecedented security crisis and humanitarian emergency since the first wave of Boko Haram attacks in 2015. Two years of insecurity and recurrent attacks have uprooted hundreds of thousands of civilians, often forced to flee multiple times, and overstretched limited basic services and resources. Almost 250,000 people remain displaced in Diffa province, most of them staying with host families. Some 400,000 people in the province, more than 1 in 2, are food insecure.
Lowcock began his roles as Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator on the first of September.
