“My country had promised a universal agreement in Paris, which was adopted and signed here in this room. That agreement cannot be renegotiated. It binds us. It unites us. Taking it apart would mean not just taking apart a pact between the states but also between the generations. It can be improved, it can have new contributions, new inputs, but we will not backtrack.”

France is not closing any doors to dialogue, provided that the conditions are met for the dialogue to lead to peace.”

Speaking at the United Nations General Debate, French President Emmanuel Macron said taking apart the Paris Agreement on climate change “would mean not just taking apart a pact between the states but also between the generations.”

Macron said he “fully respect the decision of the United States” to back from the Agreement but he said “we will continue with all governments, local communities, cities, businesses, NGOs and citizens to implement the Paris Agreement.”

On the North Korea nuclear crisis, Macron said “France is not closing any doors to dialogue” and added in “our responsibility, with all our partners including China and Russia is, through resolve, to bring the North Korea to the negotiating table and to a political resolution of the crisis.”

He also voiced a support for the Iran nuclear deal, signed in 2015, and said that “not respecting it would be irresponsible because this is a good agreement, it is a useful agreement, essential for the peace at the moment when the risk of a downward spiral cannot be ruled out.”

French President expressed his support for the UN system reforms, proposed by its Secretary-General António Guterres. He said “I want the UN to be more responsible, more efficient, more agile.”

Talking to the press after his remarks at the GA, Macron said he hoped that the announced Kurdish referendum on independence would end up “with a proper representation of Kurds in Iraqi government and its constitution.”

Macron said “today in Iraq we need stability – territorial and political.”
