Addressing the United Nations General Debate, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko made a case for deploying a “full-fledged UN peacekeeping operation” to Ukraine’s restive east. Poroshenko also said “Russia is not a contributor to the international security, but its biggest threat.”

In his speech in front of the United Nations General Assembly in New York today (20 Sep), President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko called Russia a “biggest threat” to the international peace.

He said “stealing other nation’s land, kidnapping people, conducting hidden war, downing civilian aircraft, spreading lies globally; is this a kind of behavior we expect from a permanent Security Council member?”

Poroshenko called for deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbas region on the east of Ukraine, where the ethnic Russian militia is combatting Ukrainian security forces since 2013.

He said “we would welcome any proposal that would bring peace to my country. We remain convinced that a full-fledged UN peacekeeping operation is the only viable solution to deescalate, to protect the people of Ukraine and to get us closer to the political solution.”

Poroshenko however, categorically refused a possibility of the Russian forces participating in the proposed mission.
