Storyline

Following a closed ministerial meeting of the EU3+3 (China, France, Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, United States) and Iran, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said all participants “agreed on the fact that all sides are implementing, so far, fully” the Iran nuclear agreement.

Mogherini described the meeting as a frank, open, and in-depth discussion adding that all sides agreed that there were no violations to the agreement. She said there were other issues outside the scope of the agreement that could be tackled in other fora. Mogherini chaired the meeting, which included US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamed Javad Zarif, this evening (20 Sep) in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The EU Representative said the general sense that was shared by the ministers is that with a nuclear threat coming from a different part of the world, “the international community cannot afford dismantling an agreement that is working and delivering.” She stressed that the agreement, also known as the JCPOA, took 12 years to negotiate and is “not a bilateral agreement.” She added, as a UN Security Council Resolution, “all member states of the United Nations are considered to be bind to the resolution.”

Mogherini confirmed discussions of the United States possibly leaving the agreement, but noted that one country does not dismantle JCPOA. She said there were no discussions of what would happen to the JCPOA if the US left, but emphasised that the EU would “make sure that the agreement stays.”
