“I would like to remind you that the roadmap is largely in line with the four “no” formulated by Rex Tillerson about a month ago. We are convinced that the UN Security Council should use this position of the United States more actively. If we talk about the exchange of threats, it is naturally very bad. It is unacceptable to seat back and watch the nuclear military gamble of the North Korea, but it is also unacceptable to start a war in Korean peninsula.”

6. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Russian Federation:
“Russian-American relationship is not suffering because there is a conflict, but rather because the previous administration was small hearted and revengeful. They have put this time bomb in the Russian-US relationship.”

8. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Russian Federation:
“At the moment, the North Korea is being told: renounce the nuclear weapons and we will lift the sanctions. But if this agreement on Iran nuclear deal falls apart, then the North Korea would say why would I need to negotiate with you if you are not carrying out your promises. It was not only a commitment but also something already implemented and you are taking it back. To me this is clear and I hope it will not be followed through.”

Storyline

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said today that pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal would set a bad example to North Korea and blamed “small hearted and revengeful” previous US administration for worsening Russian-US relationship.

Lavrov was briefing the media in New York Friday (22 Sep), a day after his speech at the General Assembly debate, where he also spoke in favor of the Iran nuclear deal and advocated against imposing unilateral sanctions.

Russian Minister told reporters that the North Korea roadmap proposed by the Russian Federation and China “is largely in line with the four ‘no’ formulated by Rex Tillerson about a month ago” and that “the UN Security Council should use this position of the United States more actively” but he “condemned the exchange of threats” both from the North Korea and the US.

Asked about the state of the US-Russian relationship, he said “Russian-American relationship is not suffering because there is a conflict, but rather because the previous administration was small hearted and revengeful."

Lavrov added in “they have put this time bomb in the Russian-US relationship.”

The Russian Foreign Minister urged against a possible pullout of the Iran nuclear deal by the US.

Lavrov said “if this agreement on Iran nuclear deal falls apart, then the North Korea would say why would I need to negotiate with you if you are not carrying out your promises. It was not only a commitment but also something already implemented and you are taking it back.”
