3. SOUNDBITE (English) Pierre Krähenbühl, Commissioner General, United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA):
“It is a community that sees no political future. There is no credible identifiable political process to bring an end to the conflict between Israel and Palestine. And this is a community that also faces considerable constraints; limitations, forms of exclusion, but also exposed to violence, conflict, occupation, and blockade in multiple forms that defines their lives in every aspect conceivable.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Pierre Krähenbühl, Commissioner General, United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA):
“Palestine refugees should not be forgotten. It is seven decades almost of a situation of injustice that has not been resolved through a political resolution and it is a community that deserves ongoing attention. Obviously the world has to deal with multiple crises; we think of Syria; we think of Yemen; of course what we are seeing these days in Myanmar and elsewhere. But the reality of 5.3 million Palestine refugees living in uncertainty and anxiety in the Near East is certainly not a factor that contributes to stability in an already unstable region.”

UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl called on the international community not to forget Palestine refugees which witnessed “seven decades almost of a situation of injustice that has not been resolved through a political resolution.”
Speaking at a press conference in New York today (22 Sep), Krähenbühl said while the world is obviously dealing with multiple crises, “the reality of 5.3 million Palestine refugees living in uncertainty and anxiety in the Near East is certainly not a factor that contributes to stability in an already unstable region.” He stressed that Palestine refugees see “no political future” and face considerable constraints including forms of exclusion, violence, conflict, occupation, and blockade “in multiple forms that defines their lives in every aspect conceivable.”
Krähenbühl said his organization was facing a shortfall of 126 million USD to its core activities and called on nations to renew their pledges. He said UNRWA acts as a quasi-state and provides education for some 500,000 students in Lebanon, Syrian, Jordan, the West Bank, and Gaza, adding that the agency cannot simply say next year that they are only going to admit 400,000 to its schools.
Krähenbühl was accompanies by two Palestinian student leaders, Rahaf from Jordan and Kareem from Gaza. Karim was elected as the president of the central student parliament for Gaza schools and represents some 270,000 students. He said students in Gaza love human rights but ask “why we do not enjoy them?” He hoped to speak on behalf of all the student of the State of Palestine when he grows up “for the doves of peace to fly.”
Rahaf said as refugees, they know they are the “victims of an historic injustice” but do not want the world to see them only as victims. She said Palestine refugees was the world to see their passion, and skills, and want their “rights to be respected.”
