3. SOUNBITE (English) Miroslav Lajcak, President of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly:
“Let me stress two points. First, of course it is a process that is fully in the hands of the Member States. It’s an intergovernmental process. And my second point is, when it comes to what I wish to see, it’s a credible process. A credible process is a process that Member States can believe. So, we don’t want to create an impression that we are wasting time pretending we are discussing something without believing in the outcome of this process. So, it would be good if at the end of this credible process we will also have a meaningful progress. So, these are my ambitions while fully respecting the role of the Member States. “

6. SOUNBITE (English) Miroslav Lajcak, President of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly:
“The theme of the 72nd Session, “Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet”, was in general well received by the speakers. Many of them referred to this theme. Some of them structured their presentations according to this theme, and they spoke positively about it. What I also found very important and positive was an overwhelming support for the United Nations’ role in peace and prevention, in upholding human rights, gender equality, the rule of law, and also the general support expressed for dialogue and for inclusivity as our working method.”

Storyline

UN General Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak hoped to see a “credible process” for reforming the Security Council adding that it would be good also to have “meaningful progress” after this process.

Speaking to reporters in New York today (26 Sep), Lajcak said Security Council reform is very visible to the outside world and many people see it as a benchmark by which they judge the readiness of the UN to actually reform. He said, ultimately, the process was in the hands of the Member States, be wished to see a process that “Member States can believe.” He added, “we don’t want to create an impression that we are wasting time pretending we are discussing something without believing in the outcome of this process.”

Lajcak was briefing reports on the outcome of the 72nd general debate which ended yesterday. He described the General Debate as smooth adding that this was the first time in over a decade that all Member and Observer States spoke. He said the most discussed topics were sustainable development – with 140 speakers referring to the issue, climate change, terrorism, nuclear weapons and the North Korean nuclear issue, as well as United Nations reform.

The President of the General Assembly said this year’s theme, “Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet”, was in general well received and some speakers even structured their presentations according to it. He said he found it “very important and positive” that there was “overwhelming support for the United Nations’ role in peace and prevention, in upholding human rights, gender equality, the rule of law, and also the general support expressed for dialogue and for inclusivity as our working method.”
