“The type of violence these people have gone through is really exceptional, is really extraordinary. And the extent of the trauma that I have observed is one that will probably be the most difficult thing to heal, even more than the physical wounds that many of them, indeed, carry.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Filippo Grandi, High Commissioner for Refugees, United Nations (UNHCR):
“They have absolutely nothing. I have hardly ever seen in my career people that have come with so little. And evidently, they had to flee from a very urgent situation, from very sudden violence. So they need everything. The most important need is, of course, a place -- suitable sites. The space is very narrow. And shelter to go with it. There is an acute need to improve water and sanitation conditions, and the provision of health.”

UN refugee agency (UNCHR) chief Filippo Grandi said the type of violence that the Rohingya refugees have gone through is “really exceptional, is really extraordinary.” He urged “the authorities in Myanmar to stop violence” in Rakhine State.
Speaking to reporters today (27 Sep) in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said “they have absolutely nothing. I have hardly ever seen in my career people that have come with so little. And evidently, they had to flee from a very urgent situation, from very sudden violence.”
He added “they need everything. The most important need is, of course, a place -- suitable sites. The space is very narrow. And shelter to go with it. There is an acute need to improve water and sanitation conditions, and the provision of health.”
Grandi also expressed concern about the combination of limited health facilities, poor sanitary, hygienic conditions, and overcrowded sites.
He said “you can well imagine, is a recipe for disaster in terms of possible epidemics.”
Grandi reiterated “the urgent call to the authorities in Myanmar to stop violence in, for violence to stop in Rakhine state, in northern Rakhine.”
The press briefing was held after Grandi’s recent visit to Bangladesh.
According to UNHCR, at the peak, there were estimated 15,000 people a day crossing the borders to Bangladesh.
As the number of Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar edges towards half a million, the UN Refugee Agency is stepping up delivery of life-saving aid to desperate people camped out near two official refugee camps in south-eastern Bangladesh.
