Storyline

UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake visited Balukhali Camp in Bangladesh, where Rohingya refugees are staying after fleeing from Myanmar.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday (03 Oct) in Bangladesh, UNICEF’s chief Anthony Lake said “for every one of the people and the children – and 60% of them are children – it is not a crisis; it’s a catastrophe.”

He added “it is urgent now, both for the sake of present need and for the sake of the future of all of us, that we do all we can as quickly as we can.”

In a joint statement released today (04 Oct) by Anthony Lake and the Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock, they called again on the Myanmar authorities to allow the full resumption of humanitarian action across all of Myanmar's Rakhine state, and will continue to advocate for conditions to be created that allow for people to safely, securely and voluntarily go home.
