Storyline

A UN Security Council delegation met with Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta today (20 Oct) in the capital Bamako as part of a visit to assess the situation in the Sahel region.

The delegation, co-led by Ethiopia, France and Italy, is meant to send a message to the parties in Mali regarding the need to accelerate the implementation of the 2015 Peace and Reconciliation Agreement and evaluate the status of the operationalization of the joint G5 Sahel force which was agreed upon last February. The 5000-strong force is meant to combat terrorism and transnational organized crime in the vast Sahel region, help restore governments’ authority, return millions of refugees and displaced people, and facilitate humanitarian relief.

French ambassador François Delattre told reporters that the meeting with the President was thorough and warm which revolved around the situation in Mali and the region. Delattre said he was “personally struck” by the President Keïta’s commitment to strengthening the G5 Sahel force. He said the President appealed to delegates to “use every possible means” to support the joint force adding that he was convinced this was a message delegates would report back to their capitals. Delattre said he would like to see the full weight of the international community in support of the Sahel efforts.
