United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres began his four-day visit to the Central African Republic by paying tribute to the UN peacekeepers who died while serving the UN mission in the country.
Guterres arrived today (24 Oct) in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic on United Nations Day, celebrated every 24 October, where he laid a wreath at the monument dedicated to the fallen peacekeepers.
To the gathered military, police, and civilian personnel of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) Guterres said, “I am very proud to be your colleague. I am very proud to serve in the same United Nations where you serve. And I want to tell all of you, Blue Helmets that here with us, that we count on you to make the UN always more effective serving the people. We are here to serve the people. To sacrifice ourselves for the people we care for. And your example is something that I will always remember. Your sacrifice is something that the UN will always honour.”
The Secretary-General also stressed the need “to make sure that the world fully appreciates the heroic contribution of peacekeepers protecting civilians sometime in extremely difficult circumstances.”
Guterres visited peacekeepers who are being treated at the MINUSCA hospital in Bangui, wounded in two separate attacks on peacekeepers in Pombolo a few days ago.
Since the beginning of the year, twelve peacekeepers lost their lives in attacks by various militias throughout the country.
During his visit, Guterres will meet the country’s President Faustin-Archange Touadéra as well as religious leaders and civil societies representatives.
