“I know several religious conflicts in the world. Almost all are caused by the political manipulation. The religious groups in the Central African Republic, the Christians, Muslims, and others have always been living together. It is absolutely necessary that the political leaders, leaders of armed groups, religious leaders call for a real reconciliation and mutual respect, understanding that everyone needs to live together in order to build a new Central African Republic.”

“In a vision we asserted today, the dialogue with the armed groups is the centre of our strategy. And this is a part of the policy to include all sons and daughters of our country. This process is vital for leaving the crisis behind and for the consolidation of peace.”

After meeting today (26 Oct) with the president and the members of the Central African government, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called upon the battling armed groups in the country to lay down their arms and take part in a national peace process.
Guterres is visiting CAR in an effort to start the national dialogue and boost international support for the impoverished African nation.
In a joint stakeout following the meeting, the Secretary-General told reporters he made three appeals. He called upon the various armed groups “to disarm and accept to participate in the political life of the country with understanding that violence, actions that produce victims are not conducive to a peaceful integration in the national community.”
Guterres appealed to political and religious leaders in the country to leaders to advance the peace process. He said, “I know several religious conflicts in the world. Almost all are caused by the political manipulation. The religious groups in the Central African Republic, the Christians, Muslims, and others have always been living together. It is absolutely necessary that the political leaders, leaders of armed groups, religious leaders call for a real reconciliation and mutual respect, understanding that everyone needs to live together in order to build a new Central African Republic.”
The Secretary-General also asked the international community to support the people of CAR during the peace process.
President Faustin Arcange Touadera said dialogue with the armed groups “is the centre” of his government’s strategy. He added that a political process “is vital for leaving the crisis behind and for the consolidation of peace.”
The UN Secretary-General will depart Bangui tomorrow, after addressing the Central Africa Parliament.
